The First Aeroplane to Fly IN Barbados, 1911. The first aeroplane to ever fly in Barbados is shown here at the Garrison on the 11th April ,1911. Owned by the "Thor Aviation Company",the aircraft,of the latest French design, was flown by George (a.k.a Otto) Schmitt. The aircraft arrived from Demerara (Guyana) by ship, the S.S. "OCAMO". It was assembled and flown, then taken apart and shipped out again several days later. As an advertising gimmick, Schmitt later dropped bags of flour from the aircraft and "bombed" DaCosta & Musson Building on Broad Street. The first aero flight TO Barbados did not take place until 1929. Photo Credit : Mr. Edward Stoute.
