Images of places in Barbados, taken between 1870-1879
Trafalgar Square (1870-1880) Notice Nelson Statue still at ground level. It wasn't raised on a 6 foot column block until 1890. Behind the statue is the fountain whose water was turned on in 1864. The building clearly seen is that of D.M Simpson founded in 1868. The building was remodeled and enlarged in 1881. The ruined wall to the right of the D.M. Simpson building is probably a relic from the Great Fire of 1860. Photo credit: Carib Publicity Co. Ltd.
